The essence of education is transformation. Education is to change oneself, to gain new skills, to equip others to do things they previously could not, to kindle appreciation where there was obliviousness, to cause improvement where there was habit. Whether you measure education by the accomplishments of a class, by the use of new skills or by a learner’s positive behavior changes, the learning experience is one that demands change and response: a transformation of self, world or community. The Gardens’ broad range of programs for all ages offered these kinds of experiences time and time again in 2009, engaging students as they explored the wonders of the connection between people and plants.
