OUR TRANSFORMATION:

• The transformation of several garden spaces was made possible by the Flourish Capital Campaign, which secured more than $2.6 million in new commitments in 2009.

• Construction began on the Mordecai Children’s Garden, thanks to the generosity of the Daniel and Janet Mordecai Foundation, the Gates Family Foundation, the Bardsley Foundation and many others.

• The Gardens reaffirmed several long-term relationships with new partnerships and investments. The Boettcher Foundation, a partner of the Gardens for 50 years, became the lead sponsor for the 2010 signature exhibit, “Moore in the Gardens.” 2009 also marked the 50th anniversary of our partnership with Swingle Lawn, Tree and Landscape Care.

• Two new investments were secured to further ensure the future of the Gardens and its many diverse programs: endowment funds for the Mordecai Children’s Garden, including Janet Mordecai’s generous match of new endowment gifts; and the Hurtt Family Botanical Art and Illustration Endowment.

• Many new partnerships and relationships that provide innovative programs to the Gardens were formed, such as programming for the Omniglobe and Science Pyramid from the Jonathan Merage Foundation, investment for the new Community Supporting

VOLUNTEER SERVICES

In 2009, more than 40 volunteers became Gardens Greeters and Ambassadors, welcoming and assisting the public in numerous ways. Whether directing visitors, answering plant questions or offering a little something extra, the Gardens’ volunteers enhanced the visitor experience for everyone with whom they came into contact.

Agriculture (CSA) program at Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield by Kaiser Permanente, scholarships for local children to attend camps at the Gardens by Veneco Oil, and presenting sponsor support of the “Jurassic Gardens” signature exhibition by Bellco Credit Union.

• Membership revenue, which has been steadily growing since 2003, once again increased in 2009, beating 2008 totals.

• To increase the value of our memberships, we introduced two new benefits: the Member-Only Morning series and complimentary admission to the Corn Maze, Blossoms of Light and Trail of Lights opening weekends – thereby increasing membership benefit attendance by 87 percent.

• The Gardens sold more than 1,000 memberships through a special groupon.com promotion, which further diversified and strengthened our membership base.
