Baltimore Sun
new york — If this indeed was Dave Trembley’s final game as Baltimore Orioles manager, it was a fitting end to his three- season run. The Orioles’ 6-3 loss to the New
York Yankees before an an- nounced crowd of 44,927 on Thursday, the team’s eighth straight defeat, had all the ele- ments of so many other games during Trembley’s tenure. They got a poor outing from a starting pitcher, this one by the normally effective Kevin Millwood. The of- fense was mostly overwhelmed by CC Sabathia, managing only three hits, though two of them were home runs. They were overmatched throughout against a superior op- ponent that has now beaten the Orioles eight straight times and in 19 of their last 22 matchups. “We made it interesting at the end there and it just didn’t work out,” Trembley said. The Orioles (15-39 overall, 6-25 on the road) fell behind by two

runs by the bottom of the first in- ning, and by four runs by the third. They did enough offensive- ly to bring up the tying run with no outs in the ninth inning against Mariano Rivera, but the Yankees closer fanned Luke Scott, retired Garrett Atkins on a groundout and struck out Adam Jones to end it. It completed a three-game sweep and a brutal 0-6 road trip for the Orioles, who were out- scored 34-8 during that span. On the trip, the Orioles batted just .188, including a .138 average with runners in scoring position. The pitchers accumulated a 5.63 ERA after Millwood was charged with six earned runs on 10 hits and four walks over 52

in falling to a career-worst 0-6. Alex Rodriguez landed the big blow with a two-run, opposite- field homer off Millwood in the third that gave the Yankees a 4-1 lead, and answered Jones’s solo shot off Sabathia in the top half of the inning. It was believed that a poor road trip — and this one couldn’t have gone any worse — ultimately could cost Trembley his job. Trembley hadn’t heard from Ori- oles President Andy MacPhail and wasn’t sure of his fate as the club prepared to fly home.

Almost perfect, and
once a farmhand
Armando Galarraga, the
biggest story in baseball, could have been a Washington National. That was five years and two teams ago, but Galarraga began his career as a rookie with the Montreal Expos system in 2001. He reached Class AA Harrisburg by 2005, at which point the Nationals traded him to the Texas Rangers as part of the package that landed them Alfonso Soriano. The last remaining Nationals
connection to Galarraga is right fielder Roger Bernadina. He played with Galarraga in 2004 in Class A Savannah, one year before the Nationals existed. “He was a pretty good pitcher,” Bernadina said. “He was a very nice guy. Very laid-back.” Early this year, Bernadina
ran into Galarraga in the minor leagues, Bernadina with Class AAA Syracuse, Galarraga with Toledo. Now both of them are in the majors, one of them enjoying newfound fame. “When you see a guy you played with going like that, it makes you feel good,” Bernadina said.
The Nationals, like everyone else in baseball, had some opinions on Galarraga losing a perfect game to Jim Joyce’s blown call with two outs in the ninth on Wednesday night. The prevailing view in the clubhouse is that Joyce deserved better. “It’s terrible,” first baseman Adam Dunn said. “He’s one of the best umpires in the game and one of the nicest guys. He cares not only about the game of baseball, but the players. For that to happen to him, it’s awful. He’s the best.” The play has spurred debate over whether baseball should expand the use of instant replay, a view the Nationals didn’t share. “That instant replay stuff, you might as well build robots to go out there,” Dunn said. “I mean, that’s part of the game. [Joyce] probably missed five calls in his entire career. “It just happened to be that
one. It’s a shame that it happened to him.” Said Manager Jim
Riggleman: “Whatever they come up with, it’s the same for both clubs. You don’t know how it’s going to help you or hurt
you. I like the idea that umpires are always an integral part of the game. There’s some human error involved. I’m okay with that.”
Dunn on Griffey Jr.
Dunn reminisced on
Thursday about Ken Griffey Jr., his friend and teammate for eight seasons with the Cincinnati Reds who retired Wednesday as a member of his original team, the Seattle Mariners.
Dunn said he remembers “more off-the-field stuff” about Griffey. “He was fun in the clubhouse. That’s what a lot of people don’t get to see. “What he did on the field, nobody could touch. He wasn’t a very good guy to talk to, because he couldn’t understand why you stunk. He was just that good. He tried, but things came so easy to him, man. We would talk hitting all the time, and I would be, ‘I can’t do that, dude. I have to take BP to get loose. I can’t just get out there at 1:07 and hit a three-run homer like you can.’ We tried to talk hitting, but it didn’t work too good.”
