Dr. Edwin L. Maxwell passed away quietly on Sunday, May 23, 2010 in Concord, California at the age of 79 after a courageous battle with cancer. Ed loved to travel, sail, hike, camp and take pictures along the way. He was an avid pianist and volunteered his time to play at the medical center in Martinez, California. He also enjoyed lively conversation and intellectually challenging discourse. Ed was born in Wash- ington, D.C. on August 3rd 1930 and operated a successful dental practice in Washington, D.C. for over twenty years. He also served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Ed was preceded in death by his parents Max and Mary Maxwell and his brother Jerome Maxwell. He is survived by his wife Rose Bower, his brother Marvin Maxwell and his wife Audrey, his first wife and mother of his two children, Florence Waters, his two children, Susan Ortiz and Ronald Maxwell, son-in-law Frank Ortiz, daughter-in-law Starr Maxwell, and grandchil- dren, Lauren, Courtney and Stephen Maxwell,Corinna and Andrew Ortiz. Ed is fond- ly remembered by Rose’s family, including her son Emil Sciarretta and his daughters Erica and Teresa from Mukilteo,Washington, also her son Peter Sciarretta, his wife Joan and their sons Stephen and Daniel, from Benicia, California, her son-in-law Frank Potter and his children, Gina, Angela, and Mia. Carol Quindlen O’Neil, 62, of Arlington, VA, Associate Dean of Academic Adminis- tration at the Georgetown University Law Center, died on June 1, 2010 at Georgetown Hospital. She had lung cancer.
Ms. O’Neil was the beloved wife of Joseph F. O’Neil, and mother of Anne O’Neil, of Washington. Walon Newsom Hicks, 91, who served 30 years in the U.S. Army and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, died at his home in Vienna, Virginia on May 25, 2010 of natural causes.
He was born on August 21, 1918 in Naples, Texas, and worked on farms and at sawmills with his family during his early boyhood years. He entered the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938, and completed his CCC ser- vice in April 1940. Later, during 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Army prior to the entry of the United States in World War II, and served during the war years in the 679th Field Artillery Regiment as a Warrant Officer and paymaster. The 679th was engaged in active campaigns in the European Theatre as part of the U.S. 8th Army, beginning in early 1944 after landing in Naples, Italy and

advancing to bombard Monte Cassino. Col. Hicks served in all six active campaigns of the regiment, from Italy, through France, Germany, to what is now Austria and the Czech Republic. Subsequent to the war, he remained in the military, and obtained a direct commission in 1948, rising to the commissioned rank of Major. After 20 years, he remained on active duty as a Chief War- rant Officer, CW04, with the Adjutant General Corps, and retired as a Lt. Col. in 1970. Lt. Col. Hicks was awarded the Bronze Star for his Services in the Italian Campaigns, and was awarded the Legion of Merit at the time of his retirement from active military duty.
Upon retirement, he worked eight years in international trade at American Export Group, Inc., a firm founded by his son and a friend.
Walon Newsom Hicks was a founding mem- ber of St. Luke's United Methodist Church of Falls Church, Virginia, having joined the church group which became St. Luke's short- ly after moving to theWashington metropoli- tan area in 1956.
He was married for 63 years to Jewell Eliza- beth Lewis Hicks of Naples, Texas. Mrs. Hicks predeceased him in 2005. He is survived by his son, David Hicks, of Vienna,VA.

Survived by wife of 49 years, Diann (Zimmer) Mitchell; two sons and best friends, Victor and Vincent; daughters-in-law, Kay and Jennifer; grandson, William; grand- daughter, Meghan and large extended family. Our hearts are broken. Bill led a life of kindness and compassion, he always had time for a joke or advice for those who seemed lost. He cherished his family and friends.
