Daring and popular Soviet-era poet

Andrei Voznesensky, 77, one of the most daring and popular po- ets of the Soviet era, died June 1 at his home near Moscow. Russian media reports said the poet had suffered strokes in recent years. Mr. Voznesensky was one of the so-called “children of the ’60s,” a generation of thinkers who tasted intellectual freedom during the post-Stalin thaw. His unusual rhymes and bold metaphors con- trasted sharply with other Soviet poetry. Mr. Voznesensky quickly won admirers abroad when he was al-

Frank W. Creel, 68, a retired

international trade administra- tor with the Commerce Depart- ment, died May 18 of lymphoma at his home in Arlington County. Dr. Creel settled in Northern Virginia in 1973 and worked for the Commerce Department until his retirement in 2000. He also wrote columns reflect- ing his conservative political views for a variety of local news- papers. In 2002, he ran an unsuc- cessful campaign for Congress on the ticket of the Constitution Ac- tion Party, which he founded. Ac- cording to The Washington Post, Dr. Creel criticized Republican Rep. Thomas M. Davis for seek- ing federal funds to rebuild the Wilson Bridge, maintaining that the Constitution did not give Congress such powers. Francis Warner Creel was born

in Tulsa and graduated from St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind. From 1963 to 1965, he served in the Peace Corps in Turkey, where he met his wife of 43 years, Ender Ones. Dr. Creel served as an infantry

officer in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He later did graduate work at the University of Chicago, receiving a doctorate in compara- tive politics of the Middle East in 1978. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Falls Church and competed in senior golf events. In addition to his wife of Ar-

lington, survivors include three children, Derya Slivka and Berna Diehl, both of Fairfax County, and James T. Creel of Arlington; two brothers; and five grandsons.

freelance announcer, narrator and spokesman for various com- panies and government agencies. He hosted the classical music program “Music ‘til Dawn” on WWDC, now known as DC101 (101.1 FM), and worked for Voice of America. Marion Toumin Gaines III was born in Daytona, Fla. He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II, flying 40 missions in the Pacific as a B-24 bomber copilot. His military decorations included the Distinguished Fly- ing Cross. After the war, he served in the

Air Force Reserve for several years and retired at the rank of captain. He graduated in the late 1940s from the University of Florida, where he worked as a broadcast- er at WRUF (850 AM), the univer- sity’s radio station. He came to Washington in the early 1950s for a job as a staff announcer at WMAL, an ABC radio and televi- sion affiliate. He hosted several local television programs and taught speech classes at George Washington University and American University. Mr. Gaines enjoyed tennis and

played regularly at several Mont- gomery County parks. His first marriage, to Julia

Walker Gaines, ended in divorce. His second wife, Sandra Pitt Gaines, died in 1973 after five years of marriage. His third mar- riage, to Rita J. Gaines, ended in divorce. His adopted stepson from his second marriage, Michael T. Gaines, died in 2009. Survivors include three chil- dren from his first marriage, Julia P. Gaines of Forest Hills, N.Y., Marion T. Gaines IV of Clinton, S.C., and Stanton W. Gaines of Kensington; an adopted stepson

Hill for Sen. Key Pittman (D- Nev.), who died in 1940, before starting her career at the GAO. She retired in 1974 after more than 30 years of service. Mrs. Jones was a member of

many charitable and hereditary organizations, including the Daughters of the American Revo- lution, Colonial Dames of Amer- ica, United Daughters of the Con- federacy, Salvation Army and Washington Club. She lived in the District, was a member of St. Al- ban’s Episcopal Church and served on the Washington Na- tional Cathedral Altar Guild. Her husband of 48 years, Dar- rell Lloyd Jones, died in 1992. Survivors include a daughter, Darrell Landon Jones Spalding of Seminole; a sister, Frances Helen Barry of Bethesda; and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Landers received a doctorate in Hispanic and Italian studies from Johns

Hopkins University, with a spe- cialty in 16th-century Spanish po- etry and its roots in Italian litera- ture.

She then taught at the Naval Academy until the early 1990s, af- ter which she spent several years as a part-time research analyst at the Washington law firm of Shook, Hardy & Bacon.

Over the years, she also volun- teered as a docent and librarian for the Washington National Op- era; an information specialist and docent at the National Gal- lery of Art; an information spe- cialist at the Smithsonian Institu- tion; and a catechist for children at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in College Park. She was a member of the church. She re- ceived the Washington National Opera’s volunteer of the year award in 2006. Rita Petti, a College Park resi- dent, was born in the central Ital- ian village of Castel Sant’Angelo. She grew up in Pescara and Flor- ence. She was a 1970 graduate of the University of Florence and settled in the D.C. area in 1972. Survivors include her husband of 37 years, John E. Landers of College Park; two children, Rena- ta Zecher of Greenbelt and Thomas Landers of Baltimore; a brother; a sister; and a grand- daughter.

In addition to her husband of 63 years, Paul Edward Beck, she is survived by their four daughters and their partners, Judy Beck and Allida Black, Christina and Phillip Updike, Catherine and Robert Freideman, Marcia and Robert Klettner. Prize-winning artist and graduate of the Corcoran School of Art, Lillieanna was also a long-time volunteer with the North Bethesda United Methodist Church and the American Red Cross. Proud of her Scottish heritage, she was a member of the Clan Montgomery. Paul and Lillieanna resided in Bethesda,MDfor almost 50 years before moving to Massanutten Village and then making their home at Loyalton of Harrisonburg. She is survived by her children, Alison Forbis and husband, Brent, of Florida, Holly Haynes of North Carolina, Russ Haynes of Maryland, and Brad Haynes and wife, Gina and grandchildren, Julia, Anna and Jacqueline of North Carolina, as well as her sister, Nancy Talbert and her husband, John, ofWest Virginia.

She had a long career as an investigator for the Montgomery County Human Relations Commission. She had a journalism degree from George Washington University. She loved to play tennis and bridge with her friends.
