ON Semi extends power offering with innovative monolithic MOSFET design

ON Semiconductor has broadened its portfolio of N-channel power MOSFET devices with the introduction of new 30 V products with integrated Schottky diodes. The NTMFS4897NF, NTMFS4898NF and

NTMFS4899NF have maximum RDS(on) values of 2 m, 3 m and 5 m respectively at 10 V, that have been optimised for synchronous side in buck converter applications to achieve higher power efficiency. Typical gate charge specifications of 39.6 nC, 25.6 nC and 12.2 nC respectively (at Vgs of 4.5 V) ensure that switching losses are also kept to a minimum. Applications for ON Semiconductor’s new

power MOSFETs include dc-dc conversion, point-of-load conversion and low side switching tasks for servers, telecom network infrastructure, PCs, notebook computers and games consoles. “The integrated Schottky improves efficiency

and waveforms by reducing dead time conduction losses facilitated by the integration into the same die as the primary FET

structure,” said Paul Leonard, vice president and general manager of the Power MOSFET business unit at ON Semiconductor. “The new devices provide our customers with a broader array of products and solutions to solve unique design challenges.” The NTMFS4897NF, NTMFS4898NF and NTMFS4899NF are all offered in compact SO- 8FL, 5 mm x 6 mm, RoHS-compliant package with low thermal resistance.

New virtual remote sense controller eliminates remote sense wires

Linear Technology has launched the LT4180, a Virtual Remote Sense DC/DC controller that eliminates the remote sense wires required to compensate for the voltage drop in cables, wires and circuit board trace runs. Voltage drops in wiring and cables that

cause load regulation errors are usually corrected by an additional set of sensing wires. The LT4180 continuously interrogates the line impedance and corrects the regulator’s output voltage. The device maintains a corrected regulated voltage at the load regardless of current or line impedance. The 3V to 50V input voltage range address

a variety of applications, including remote instrumentation, battery charging, wall adaptors, notebook power, surveillance equipment and halogen lighting. The LT4180 operates with any topology

regulator in either isolated or non-isolated power supplies. The output correction is obtained by modulating the output and measuring the incremental change in voltage

that occurs with a change in current. Any modulation noise is eliminated by the supply bypass capacitor located at the load. According to Robert Dobkin, vice president

of engineering and CTO for Linear Technology. “The LT4180 provides a new function for power supply designers. Regulation is obtained without sense wires, eliminating the need for point-of-load regulators. Difficult regulation problems such as long wire runs or system retrofits can be accommodated. With halogen lights, the light output drops

more quickly than power, so keeping the correct voltage more than compensates for any additional cost of the power supply.” Three temperature grades are available: an

extended grade version from -40 to 85°C, an industrial grade version from -40°C to 125°C and a military grade option from -55°C to 125°C.

New range of medical power supply units from TDK-Lambda

TDK-Lambda has unveiled a new range of medically-approved AC-DC power supplies. The NVM175 range combines a 4.5kVac reinforced input to output isolation with dual fusing and an output-to-ground isolation of 1500Vac, the NVM175 meets UL/EN/IEC60601-1 and is suitable for use in BF type medical applications. Offered in a 5” x 3” footprint with less

than 1U height, the new NVM175 supplies have universal ac input and are rated at 180W at 50°C with customer air. Leakage current is less than 200µA at 264Vac/63Hz surpassing worldwide medical equipment requirements. It is also equally suitable for other applications including broadcast, instrumentation, routers, servers and security networks, as well as ATE and automation equipment. The NVM175 is available with either 12

or 24V output voltage (with 12V/0.2A standby). As well as an impressive technical performance, the NVM175 meets TDK- Lambda’s design brief for environmentally responsible products by achieving up to 90% efficiency, less than 1W standby power and RoHS and REACH compliance. Other standard features include a power good signal, remote on/off, remote sense and

protection from over current, over voltage and over temperature conditions. Products in the TDK-Lambda NVM175 range meet Class B conducted and radiated EMC EN55011 and EN55022. All models have TDK-Lambda’s three-year warranty, as well as EN/IEC/UL/CSA 60601-1, EN/IEC/UL/CSA60950-1 and CE approvals.
