rocket science, a 1995 riptide 55, is an ultralight
sailing machine. Naval architect Paul Bieker’s design, draw-
ing and engineering for this amazing vessel were seamlessly Rocket Science: High performance
developed through a computer process that brought all three
dimensions together. Capable of speeds in excess of 20 knots, offshore cruising yacht
Rocket Science’s structure, hull, rig and systems allow her to
do so safely with shorthanded crew. Construction standards
included abs slamming standards for fast military craft and
Det Norske Veritas standards for fasy offshore motor craft –
ensuring the boat is able to endure years of ocean abuse and
maintain hull integrity in case of hitting a log or container at
14 knots. Her carbon fi ber hull and deck, deep fi n keel, addi-
tional water ballast, twin rudders, new carbon fi ber Hall spar
and easily controlled sail plan are further evidence of her
design intent. And she offers comfort too: Three staterooms,
places to gather or curl up and read a good book, a great sea-
going galley and a dinghy garage for all the toys.
After an extensive refi t, the current owners and their two
young children put Rocket Science to the true test, circum-
navigating the Atlantic and returning to the Pacifi c via the
Panama Canal, Galapagos Islands and Costa Rica. They were
not disappointed. Her days at sea were exhilarating, time
on the hook comfortable and accommodating, and she was
easily handled by this cruising couple. Now home from her
world cruise, Rocket Science lives up to her name, and she is
ready to launch again.
