and so retired from the race. Zorra headed
into Mukilteo since one of their crew had
heart attack symptoms. The ferry and
the local fire department coordinated
his evacuation from the boat. The Flying
Tiger, Firecracker, limped into Edmonds
without a main.
Gardyloo, with several inexperienced
crew aboard, spent extensive time with
her keel in the air. About halfway to
the mark Gardyloo broached, damaging
their spinnaker about 100 yards from
a tug towing a barge. Tim Cleary said,
“Our #4 blew out of the Tuff Luff twice,
so we sailed for a time with just a full
main. We finally got the #4 back up, put
a reef in the main and finished with the
Moore 24s.” Gary Stuntz, also aboard
Gardyloo, noted also that the traveler
broke and that his sail loft picked up 22
sails for repair.

Boats that broached far outnumbered
those that didn’t. Tantivy recorded a
speed of 16.2 during the brief time when
she was upright. Absolutely and Tryst
broached several times, and Gladiator
and Elusive were down for a while.
Gaucho held her spinnaker nearly all
the way to the mark, but finally crashed
near the end of the leg. Declaration of
Independence rounded up for the first time
in seven years. The Olson 30 Lunchbox
turned a bright yellow spinnaker into a
hanky. Katrinka Finklesplatt boldly flew
a new purple and pink spinnaker one
moment; then a moment later her crew
was pulling a soggy version of it back
aboard. Kowloon ripped a spinnaker and
