Valleys and Villages
Discover at your leisure the delights of
the many traditional Lakeland villages,
nestling in Keswick’s neighbouring
valleys. You can leave the car behind
and enjoy a day out on one of the area’s
bus services, including the Caldbeck,
Honister and Borrowdale Ramblers.
To the East are the woods and lakeside
paths around Thirlmere and the peaceful
St John’s-in-the-Vale, dominated by the
imposing fells of Blencathra. The village
of Threlkeld is situated at the foot of
Blencathra looking towards Clough Head
at the Northern end of the Helvellyn
range. To the north are the fellside
villages to the back of Skiddaw, from
the attractive villages of Caldbeck and
Hesket Newmarket to the hamlets of
Ireby and Mungrisdale.
THE BORROWDALE VALLEY
Borrowdale has been called the loveliest
valley in England and many of its visitors
would agree with this, from the broad
stretch of Derwentwater at its foot to
the craggy view points of the high fells.
Watendlath, one of the hidden gems of
the area, was left behind as huge glaciers
scoured out the main valley below. The
hamlet has a seven acre tarn of the same
name stocked with trout for fishing. It
is situated two and a half miles along
