Getting to the Goal T e dream began nearly a year ago at home in Melbourne, Australia. Jade had grown up with her dad’s stories of high adventure. She had had a few small adventures herself. But one day, she learned about the Polar Hat Trick. T is name was given to the feat of trekking nearly 2,000 kilometers across the North Pole, the South Pole, and Greenland in three separate trips. Few people had ever tried it. Fewer still had ever succeeded. Once the goal was made, Jade’s dad began
helping her prepare. An expedition like this needed a lot of careful planning and training. For starters, Jade didn’t know how to ski! So she and her dad went to a fi ve-day snow survival camp in New Zealand.
As part of Jade's strength training, she dragged tires across the beach.
T ere in the mountains, Jade worked up to
cross-country skiing about 15 kilometers a day, while dragging a heavy sled. Back home, she focused on strength and endurance training. She worked out in the gym aſt er school. Once a week, she went to the Melbourne Altitude Training Centre. It had a low-oxygen training room set to mimic thin mountain air. In that room, she built up her endurance on a treadmill and spin bike, one hour at a time. Outdoors, Jade trained on the beach. During
three-and-a-half-hour sessions, she'd drag heavy tires on ropes through the sand. T is prepared her for dragging the supply sled she would need in the Arctic. Aſt er months of training, she was ready.
