New Understanding Scientists have recently discovered something that surprised them. Tere are two species of quetzal. One type is found in southern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and parts of El Salvador and Nicaragua. Te other species lives in Costa Rica and
the highlands of Panama. Tis diversity is good news. Yet it also means that each species is more rare than previously thought. Te quetzal is legally protected in Mexico,
Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Panama. Tese countries work hard to enforce the laws.
For instance, Costa Rica has an extensive
system of wildlife preserves and national parks. Tis system, supported by tourism, protects quetzals. During the breeding season, these birds are safe in a preserve. But at other times of the year, they migrate to unprotected areas. To best help the quetzals, people must
combine their efforts. Tey can help reduce fragmentation by joining together ares of queztal habitat. Tey can enforce penalties against those who harm the birds. By working together, people can help resplendent quetzals continue to fly free in the highlands.
