baobab trees, Africa
trunk
WORDWISE Trunk Tanks
T e heat shimmers above the African plains. It does not rain oſt en here. Yet the baobab tree stands tall and green. Baobab trees live for hundreds of years. T ey can survive for years without fresh water.
T eir secret is in their trunk. T eir long, bottled-shape trunks allow them to store huge amounts of water. T ey normally store at least 300 liters of water and in some cases much, much more—up to 120,000 liters! When the weather gets dry, these trees don’t. T e baobab, mangrove, and rainbow
eucalyptus are three of many types of trees around the world. Trees make their own food. T ey take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. T ey've been thriving on this planet for a lot longer than humans. Where would we be without them?
