Important Findings Star Boy and I made it back to the village safely. At fi rst, I felt disappointed. But over time, I came to think of the experience diff erently. Sure, it was miserable. But we now have
information about an otherwise unexplored region of the world. T ree other lakes were completely fi shless.
But these fi shless lakes teemed with other forms of life: frogs, dragonfl ies, diving birds, freshwater shrimp, and crabs. And I did fi nd fi sh in other places. In
addition to the lakes, I sampled 33 rivers. I collected more than 3,500 fi sh specimens and approximately 10,000 aquatic invertebrates. My trip was the most extensive scientifi c
expedition into the region to date. T is collection gives scientists a beginning for further study of the crater lakes ecosystem. Hopefully, my work will also spur conservation eff orts in the area. As for me, I’m already planning my next expedition. Only 25 more lakes to go!
This net yielded a handful of fi sh.
