avoid risky situations. Hence, all staff members at Choate Construction—from senior management to laborers—are required to complete a comprehensive safety orientation on their first day of work.

“After the orientation, we ask the employee to sign our OneLife banner with the names of their loved ones for whom they are committing to work safely. After that, training occurs on a regular basis as is appropriate for the position,” says Hart.

The leading causes of job-related fatalities in construction include falls, electrocution, being struck by an object, and getting caught in or between equipment or objects. Choate Construction strives to provide a workplace free from such hazards through constant jobsite inspections and continuing education for its employees.

COMMITMENT IN ACTION

Each year, across all job sites and offices, Choate Construction employees display their commitment to the OneLife safety program by participating in OSHA Stand-Downs. Work pauses briefly as Choate Construction personnel speak candidly to trade professionals about the importance of jobsite safety. The Stand-Downs bring renewed dedication to OneLife,

encouraging employees to make intelligent decisions with safety at the forefront.

Choate Construction’s high safety standards have resulted in numerous honorary distinctions. This year already, the firm and its members have been awarded the following for noteworthy safety practices:

• North Carolina Dept. of Labor Gold Safety Award • Associated Builders and Contractors Gold STEP Award • Carolinas AGC Presidential Award for Safety Excellence • National Association of Women in Construction Safety Excellence Award

• 40 Choate Superintendents received the AGC Ron Amerson Supervisors’ Safety Award

As the OneLife identity continues to remind people of the lives and legacies worth protecting and preserving, Choate Construction’s commitment to safer, smarter construction practices will undoubtedly leave a legacy of hope for all.
