When asked what professional ac- complishments he is most proud of, Hart points to his leadership role in the OneLife safety initiative as one of his crowning achievements.


The “I Work Safe For” banner, where employees handwrite the names of the loved ones that depend on their safe return home. This banner, a constant reminder of the personal reasons to make safe decisions, is hung somewhere central on the jobsite for all to see.


“Safety and operations must be reliant upon each other if you are going to have a robust safety culture. If a safety program isn’t adopted by the opera- tions teams, your organization will suffer from incidents and will never mature to a level


that employees


believe in. Complete safety requires a team approach and must be a core value of the company,” says Hart.


The new safety approach empowers employees by giving them permission to work safely and without fear, adds Hart. This “no fear” attitude is one that the Michigan native has identified with since he was a teenager.


A FEARLESS JOURNEY


Hart comes from a family of factory workers and farmers, and as a child dreamed of working in one of the General Motors factories. At 15 years old, he met Bill Foley, one of the most influential role models in his life. Bill helped Chad secure a job working for a small custom cabinet maker in his hometown in Clio, Michigan.


“For three years I worked alongside some unbelievably skilled craftsmen


at this shop. After-hours and week- ends were spent at Bill’s home, assist- ing with odd jobs. He was an exacting man and the hardest worker I have ever met, and taught me to never be afraid to attempt new things. The most im- portant thing he taught me was to have a ‘no fear’ attitude in tackling difficult situations,” remembers Hart.


Hart attended Western Michigan University and studied Construction Science and Management. He began working for Choate Construction in 1994, first on a survey crew. Later he was promoted to Assistant Superinten- dent, then Superintendent, and eventu- ally transitioned into his current role as Corporate Safety Director.


“I feel honored to help lead our team from compliance to commitment in this capacity. Finding our safety iden- tity and developing our safety brand, OneLife, has provided the rallying point we needed to create positive change throughout our organization,” he shares. “These behavior change tools encourage our workers to do what is right by connecting them to the most important aspect of safety, which is going home to their loved ones each and every night.”


ONELIFE PROTECTS


The OneLife identity reminds workers that they have one life and one legacy to protect. The logo contains an image of three figures standing in front or behind each other to illustrate the loved ones connected to each worker. OneLife logos are placed on all of the company’s safety and personal pro- tective equipment, site signage, and other collateral.
