Choate Construction Co. employees display their commitment to the OneLife safety program by participating in OSHA Stand-Downs each year.
CORPORATE CULTURE OF SAFETY
Cultivating a culture of safety is a top priority at Choate Construction, one of the nation’s largest commercial build- ing contractors. The company has a unique safety campaign called OneLife, which uses visual reminders to chal- lenge people on a daily basis to make safe decisions in the workplace.
“From the beginning, Choate Con- struction has been based on relation- ships, both within the organization as well as with our subcontractors and the clients that we serve,” says Chad Hart, Corporate Safety Director at Choate Construction. “Our OneLife identity helps reinforce those relation- ships by demonstrating a genuine care
for the well-being of each and every person who comes into contact with our company.”
Founded by William Millard Choate in 1989 and with five offices in the South- eastern region of the U.S., Choate Construction provides general con- tracting and construction management services in multiple market sectors. With over 450 full-time employees, Choate Construction consistently ranks in Engineering-News Record maga- zine’s National Top 400 Contractors and Southeast Top Contractors lists.
In recent years, the company recognized that its continued growth necessitat- ed more targeted measures to protect employees. The general contractor instituted Safety Lead Teams comprised
of senior leaders in the organization for each office. It was during a safety action meeting that these team members de- veloped a simple, visual statement to provide an “identity” to Choate Con- struction’s safety program. Thus, the OneLife brand and logo were born.
“Safety is a fundamental value at our company, and we take very seriously the fact that we represent thousands of families that depend on their loved ones returning home safely. There is no room for anything but excellence in this arena,” states Hart.
Hart and his seven-member team of dedicated safety professionals work hand-in-hand with operations leaders to build a positive, safety-centered work environment.
