architecture passed down through the generations to Catriona. Her family, on both paternal and maternal sides, is native to Scotland and has been involved in the building trades for many generations. Through the years, her family has owned saw mills and performed building contracting.
Inspired by her family’s legacy of leadership in the build- ing trade, Catriona attended college in Scotland where she studied business administration and supervisory man- agement. By the age of 22, she was working for a build- ing supply firm as the sales manager in a Scottish regional sales center. At age 24, she made the courageous decision to leave her family and the life she knew to pursue a career in real estate 3,000 miles away. She found early success in this new industry, winning two sales awards from the Build- ing Industry Association (BIA).
Her real estate career led her to Los Angeles as a Senior Real Estate Consultant, where she handled a $350 million development in Hollywood. This particular experi- ence gave her insight into the total construction picture,
“from a hole in the ground to the finished product,” she recalls. From that project, she was selected by one of the oldest private equity firms in the world to sell its new multimillion-dollar properties.
Catriona’s career in real estate was met with many im- pressive accomplishments, and she set sales records in both downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood. Still, her adventurous spirit led her to search for further opportu- nity as she pursued the American Dream.
FORMING THE NEW TEAM IN BUILDING
It was in Los Angeles that she met her husband-to-be, J.R. Mariano. J.R. held a high-level corporate position in the American auto industry, but was ready to make a change. He had always been good with tools, and Catriona, who had grown up in a contracting family, convinced him to follow his passion and get a contractor’s license. Within a few years, J.R. and Catriona started Jamie’s Kitchen & Bath as an elite kitchen and bath interior design-build firm,
