Philadelphia Belles celebrate 50th

to celebrate their founding anniversary. Members from the 1970s to the present raised their glasses to honor this milestone. A piper serenaded the ladies and seven black-tie-clad gentlemen served lunch, accompanied by memories of fun and friendship over the years. Since their founding, the Belles have been active participants in the


growth of women’s curling, representing and occasionally winning GNCC events including the Women’s Challenge, Kayser Mixed, and GNCC Senior Women’s; national events, including the USWCA All-American, USWCA National Women’s, USWCA Senior National Women’s, and USCA Senior Worlds; as well as Junior Nationals and the Youth Olympic Games. We are grateful to those determined women of the Philadelphia Curling Club who emerged from the back rooms to take their rightful place on the ice. Te Philadelphia Belles look forward to their next fabulous 50 years. Q

We felt that we had an opportunity to promote some change in this regard and we started by instituting our first women’s league. Holding a women’s bonspiel was an obvious next step as the number of women’s spiels is limited, especially as opens grow in popularity. We also wanted to make our event unique. in April attracts people from all over the U.S. We felt that coordinating our women’s bonspiel with the Vera Bradley sale would showcase the best of Fort Wayne, with first-class opportunities to curl, eat, and shop. We tried to hold the event in 2014 but failed to raise sufficient interest.


Ten we learned about the USWCA Circuit and found that this was an ideal solution. Just signing up to be on the Circuit was enough to get this bonspiel launched and we are grateful to the USWCA for its support. For those who are not familiar with the Fort Wayne Curling Club, we


are one of the most dynamic curling clubs in the U.S. While curling existed in Fort Wayne back in the 1880s, the club was only re-established in 2010. Since that time we have: 1. Held numerous summerspiels, some as large as 60 teams, and one


hosted the women’s Olympic teams from China and Great Britain as well as the U.S. women’s Olympic teams from 2006, 2010, 2014. 2. Hosted the inaugural U.S. Arena National Championships.
