CHAMPIONSHIPS By Terry L. Davis, Editor

Mixed Doubles National Championship title Dec. 8 at the Denver Curling Club. For Schultz, it took defeating her 2014 Olympic teammate and 10-time

national champion Allison Pottinger, who was competing with husband Doug Pottinger (Eden Prairie, Minn.), who also has a national champion- ship on his list of achievements. Te Pottingers scored first and put two points on the scoreboard. Schultz

and Smith countered with a draw for three points to begin their offensive output. With the final stone of the third end, the Pottingers were in a pick- le. Doug Pottinger’s final draw against four Smith-Schultz stones came up short and they gave up a key steal of three points. Schultz, who competed in the 2014 and 2006 Olympic Games, and Smith, who competed in the 2010 Olympics, would steal singles in the next two ends before forcing the Pottingers into taking a single point in the sixth end. One more point for Schultz and Smith in the seventh was enough for the Pottingers, who then conceded. “It feels really good to be out on the ice again and trying our hand at a

different event,” said Smith, 32, who played vice skip for John Shuster at the 2010 Olympic Games and is currently lead for Olympian Pete Fenson. Both teams will now advance to the 2016 World Mixed Doubles Team

Trials Feb. 25-28 at curling’s Olympic Training Site in Blaine, Minn. Te event will also feature Kroy Nernberger (Madison, Wis.) and Nina Roth (McFarland, Wis.), who won the C Bracket with a 7-5 win over Alex Carlson (St. Paul, Minn.) and Alex Leichter (Boston). In addition, last year’s champi- ons (Sarah Anderson and Korey Dropkin) and up to four more teams will be added to the Trials to select Team USA for the 2016 World Mixed Doubles, which will take place April 16-23 in Karlstad, Sweden. “Qualifying in this event was our first goal. Tere is still a long road

ahead in qualifying for Worlds and we are looking forward to the competi- tion in February,” said Schultz, 31, who is a three-time U.S. women’s na- tional champion.
