CELEBRATING 150 YEARS //

Up Curling Supplies (http://www.broomsupcurlingsupplies.com/) aſter Oct. 22. For those interested in learning more about the his- tory and achievements of our nation’s first curling association, a new book titled “Grand National 150, a Celebration of Curling” will be released. In addition to an official banquet at the region’s annual spring

meeting and plans for a founders’ day event in New York City on June 26, 2017, the region is encouraging all of its member clubs to mark the 150th

through community outreach. Grant funds from

the GNCC will help make these events possible. Training clinics, funded in part by a grant from the U.S. Curling Association, will also be offered in various locations throughout the curling season. Te curling community is encouraged to join the GNCC in this

celebration through Twitter at #GNCC150. Curlers can learn more about the sesquicentennial and how local GNCC clubs are cel- ebrating at www.gncc.org and through USA Curling social media during the 2016-17 season. Q (Sources include interviews with GNCC board members, www.

gncc.org, and GNCC Annual no. XXXVIII.) Te tartan framing these feature pages, as well as the magazine cover, was

woven exclusively for the GNCC’s 150th celebration by Martin Mills Co. Ltd. in England. Te tartan will be registered with the Scottish Tartan Author-

ity in Edinburgh, Scotland. Items made from the fabric will include, tams, pocket squares, ties, flashes, sashes and custom craſted traditional and sports kilts, created by USA Kilts.

Limited edition iron curling stone book ends and quoits (below) were cast by Peter Lyons, president of Nashua Foundries in Nashua, N.H. Te bookends were inspired by early Canadian curling stone irons. According to Gwen Krailo-Lyons, president of the GNCC, the organization’s quoits tourna-

ment is “the oldest annually contested athletic event in North America. Te America’s Cup is older, but has not been annually contested.” Quoits were first thrown as part of the GNCC’s first Annual Meeting in June 1868.

Logoed apparel (above) including hats, hoodies, and polo shirts will be sold through Brooms Up Curling Supplies. Each item will come with a tartan hang tag featuring a quote from a GNCC curler.
