Middle school girls' lacrosse players help to recruit younger athletes to lacrosse as part of a program developed by the Tidewater Chapter in southeastern Virginia.

GROWING THE GAME TIDEWATER’S YOUTHFUL AMBASSADORS SPREADING LACROSSE GOODWILL

BY PAUL OHANIAN One of the most innovative strategies in growing the

sport has been deployed recently by the Tidewater (Va.) Chapter of US Lacrosse. The chapter's Ambassador Program centers on middle school girls attracting younger girls to lacrosse.

“Getting the help of enthusiastic, middle school girls seemed to be the right way to connect the dots to the next generation,” said Dan Neumann, program originator. The Ambassador Program pulls together 26 well- rounded, middle school girls’ lacrosse players who fi rst must be nominated by coaches and teachers, and then must shine through a screening process overseen by the chapter. Grade point average and community service represent factors as important as lacrosse skills. Once selected, the ambassadors serve as part role model, part mentor, part cheerleader, and part innovator in attracting younger players.

“[They're focused] on showcasing the sport,” said Jim Old, president of the Tidewater Chapter. Since the launch of the program last spring, the ambassadors have volunteered at youth clinics, served as speakers in schools, represented the chapter at community events and been active in supporting other special events. Their outreach activities have included escorting younger players to college games. Through it all, the ambassadors leverage their social media expertise to increase lacrosse awareness. “It’s so nice to see their pictures and their photos wearing chapter gear all over the place,” Neumann said. The girls readily provide their adult advisors with suggestions to expand their engagement in the community. One of those ideas was to have each of them pursue certifi cation as a US Lacrosse junior offi cial. The girls hope to offi ciate youth games this spring. “The girls have exceeded our expectations,” he said. USL
