subtly miss the cage to keep the referee’s shot clock at bay. Metz also moved Steve Pontrello

from fi rst midfi eld to attack, where North Carolina could utilize his speed as an initiator. Pontrello nearly tripled his assist total and had 70 points. Film sessions regularly occur in small groups within position units or friendly cliques and can serve as bonding experiences, especially after wins. My preferred format as one of Metz’s understudies at Princeton was either at home by myself or sharing a 9-inch screen with Metz in his corner cubicle. During one independent fi lm study, I

drafted up a solution for the potential zone defense coming our way and presented it to Metz the next day. He fl ashed his infamous Cheshire Cat toothless grin and pushed the front of his tongue toward his bottom lip. We had created the same play. Instead of plugging players into a robotic system, Metz matches personnel with sets and plays. Some of these strategies, like North Carolina’s base 1-3-2 set — high wing alley dodge, attack triangle rotation, crease midfi elder pop and backside midfi elder drift — exist in playbooks across the country. Others live in a quirky library of old hand-written diagrams organized in a fashion only Metz understands. If the talent (or lack thereof) requires tailor- made plays, so be it. Such was the case with “Rasheed Wallace,” a man-up play even Metz admits may never see the light of day again. The Tar Heels scored 13, 18 and 14 goals against Notre Dame, Loyola and Maryland, respectively. Remarkably, they shredded these teams without a single fi rst-, second- or third-team All-American on offense. (Kelly, Pontrello and Michael Tagliaferri earned honorable-mention nods.) Was it magic? Emotion? Energy? Another unquantifi able media narrative, perhaps?

Apple Shampoo is the name, going back to Metzbower's Princeton days, of the fake-fl ip extra-man offense play North Carolina ran in overtime against Maryland in the NCAA championship game, ending in the game-winning goal by Chris Cloutier.

Once the X player passes him, the low-right crease backpedals to the low- right base along GLE looking for a potential skip. On the backside, the left wing pops up to the high-left shooter position ready for a time-and-room shot, and the low-left crease leaks out to the low-left base along GLE, also in search of the skip lane.
