OBITUARIES DEVITT Joan Devitt (nee Mary Joan LaCasse) passed

away suddenly of heart failure on March 13, 2017, in Jay, New York. She was 84. Joan was born in Camden, New Jersey, on March

21, 1932. She graduated from Camden Catholic School in 1949 and then earned a certificate in office administration from a local business school. As a teen- ager, she was an accomplished roller skater but then discovered the ice, which became her true passion. Joan met her husband Jack at the International

Figure Skating Club in Philadelphia, where they became ice dance partners in the early 1950s. The pair spent many weekends and summers

training in Lake Placid, New York, and went on to earn several competition titles. They decided to become life partners and married in 1956. Jack and Joan’s love for skating and Lake Placid inspired them to move their family to the Adirondacks in 1969 when Jack was invited to become director of the Skating Club of Lake Placid. Together they ran the club and, over the decades, touched the lives of hundreds of children and adults whom they taught. Pillars of the skating community and the town, they were honored to be inducted into the Lake Placid Hall of Fame in 2012. Joan is survived by Jack and their four children and their spouses: John Joseph Devitt Jr. and Lori Brock-Devitt of Asheville, North Carolina; Mary

She will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in Joan’s

honor to the Skating Club of Lake Placid, PO Box 528, Lake Placid, NY 12496. PREMER Dr. Robert F. “Bud” Premer was the sum of many

parts: a figure skater, golfer, doctor, veteran, profes- sor of orthopaedic surgery, speaker on alcoholism and drugs, loving husband, father and grandfather. Born on Dec. 12, 1926, in Saint Paul, Minnesota,

Bud passed away on April 13, 2017, at the age of 90. He faced his final battle against cancer with courage and dignity. He is left behind by his wife and best friend of more than 50 years, Ruth; his beloved daughters, Danna and Sidney; sons-in-law, Ken Tegt- meyer and Stephen Migliori; and seven grandkids, Aly, Ben, Nick, Sam, Sarah, Izzy and Maggie. He is the son of the late Frederick and Mary

Hastedt Premer, brother to the late Mary Louise Wright and brother-in-law to Benjamin Wright. Sports were a large part of his life; he skated

competitively and, at age 11, was the youngest male at the 1938 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Bud

graduated from the Minnesota Medical School in 1950 and was drafted in 1953 while in residency at the Minneapolis VA Hospital. He served three years in the Army Medical Corps, being stationed in Japan, Korea and Germany, and received the Bronze Star. After returning, he joined the orthopaedic staff

at the VA. He was chief of orthopaedics at the Minne- apolis VA Hospital from 1960 until his retirement in 1994. In 2010, he was awarded the James Diehl Award for “outstanding service to the University of Minnesota and Medical Community of Minnesota.” A prolific reader and an academic, Dr. Premer

loved nothing more than to further himself by way of a good book. Forty-seven years sober, Bud traveled across the country speaking of his enduring battle with alcoholism. He was the founding chair of Physicians Serving Physicians, a founding member of the board of The Retreat in Wayzata, Minnesota, and served as local chair of International Doctors in AA. He is deeply missed by family, friends, students,

patients and colleagues. A memorial service will be held June 16 at noon in the Lakewood Cemetery Chapel. Visitation 45 minutes prior. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor may be made to any of the following organi- zations: The Retreat, 1221 Wayzata Blvd., Wayzata, MN 55391; PSP, 4530 W 77th St. #240, Edina MN 55435; The Orthopaedic Resident Education Fund #15034, University of Minnesota.
