LAWLESS The Los Angeles Fig-
ure Skating Club remem- bers and honors lifetime member Josephine “Jo” Lawless, who passed away in April. Originally a skater
from the Minneapolis and Saint Paul area of Minne- sota, Jo was active with the LAFSC for more than 50 years as a board member, test chair, historian, newsletter editor, judge and referee. She served on many U.S. Figure Skating committees and had a long list of “firsts” for women in U.S. Figure Skating history. She was one of the first women to receive a referee appointment, she was the first woman to chair the competitions committee and she was the first to be selected as chief referee at a national championship. Jo conducted several referee schools and was
a mentor to many referees. Those who knew Jo best remember her as knowledgeable, efficient, cordial and no-nonsense, but she also had a qui- et, but great sense of humor. Along with her numerous leadership activ-
ities, she still found time to occasionally get in some ice dancing. Jo was preceded in death by her loving hus- band Milton Lawless, who was also a LAFSC life-
time member, and is survived by their children, George and J.J. We owe Jo a huge debt of gratitude and will
miss her tremendous contributions to the world of figure skating.
ZURLINDEN Pete Zurlinden, a long- time member and music coordinator at major U.S. Figure Skating champion- ship events, passed away on Aug. 19, 2015, at his home in La Crescenta, Cal- ifornia, after a courageous eight-month battle with esophageal cancer. He was 68. For three decades, Pete volunteered his time
and technical talent to the sport of figure skating. “His presence in the music room at a cham-
pionship competition was just plain natural — as if he belonged there and he was expected to be part of our music team,” said Ann O’Keefe, an announcer, current national vice chair for an- nouncers and music coordinator who trained un- der Pete’s tutelage. “Coaches and skaters always looked for Pete when they encountered a music problem. So many skaters owe a special thanks to him for his technical help and support.” Music colleague Gene Theilman brought Pete
on board with the music crew for the 1989 U.S. Championships in Baltimore. Pete then served in various music and technical coordinator roles (often as chief) for almost 20 U.S. Championships. His international service was highlighted by four World Championships and the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Pete described himself as “a typical skating
dad,” a proud father who supported his daughter Amy during her 14 competitive years. Then one day while he was serving as the president of the Pasadena FSC, someone asked for a volunteer to serve as an announcer. “I accepted once and got hooked for life,” Pete said in a 1997 article for SKATING magazine. He also commented, “All you need is a love of the sport.”
“How fortunate we all are that Pete got hooked and loved skating,” O’Keefe said. “His en- gineering knowledge and technical skills were instrumental in our modernizing equipment, up- dating recording techniques and event protocols. From cassette tapes, CDs, mini disk and now dig- ital music, he saw and experienced it all. His ded- ication helped us improve our standards, making us a highly professional and respected part of skating officials.” Pete is survived by his loving wife of 47 years,
Carol; his daughter, Amy; and two grandchildren, Alex and Nicole.
