U.S. FIGURE SKATING SALUTES TOP S.T.A.R.S. PERFORMERS
U.S. Figure Skating would like to honor the top finishers of the 2015 S.T.A.R.S. combine season. More than 1,300 athletes participated in 24 combines nationwide. By completing the annual combine, athletes have the opportunity to track and monitor their athletic development, as well as see how they score against their peers.
TOP FEMALE AGE 6–10
ALYSA LIU St. Moritz Figure Skating Club, Intermediate
Completing S.T.A.R.S. for the first time, Liu iden- tified areas in her off-ice training regimen that are critical to her on-ice improvement. Her long-term goals include competing at the U.S. Champion- ships and the Olympic Winter Games. She is the oldest of five siblings and loves swimming, Latin dance and playing games on her phone.

Joseph Klein TOP MALE AGE 6–10
JOSEPH KLEIN Skokie Valley Skating Club, Juvenile
Klein was well-prepared entering his first S.T.A.R.S. combine, having worked closely with the experts at the Northbrook Sports Center and FitSpeed Ath- letic Performance in Northbrook, Illinois. “When I started working on skills with my trainers, my endurance and jump height improved. Tey told me many of the S.T.A.R.S. elements were the same things they work on with athletes going into the NFL combine.” Klein also has a background in competitive gymnastics and trains alongside his big sister Chloe. He also has a brother, Payton.

Wein has been a top performer for two consecutive years, training at the Wheaton Ice Skating Acade- my with ice dance partner Emma Gunter. By com- pleting the annual assessment, Wein uses the com- bine scores to help him monitor and identify areas that need improvement. “I realized that flexibility was one of my weaker areas, so that was one of the things I focused on this year. Flexibility is import- ant for good lines and extensions, and the results helped me focus on improving that area.” His goals

include adding more speed to his skating. Improv- ing sprint times will help contribute to that skill, Wein said. Wein enjoys listening to jazz and classic rock on vinyl and aspires to be a paleontologist. Caleb Wein and Emma Gunter
