Figure skating movie to debut next winter
Maddison Bullock knows a thing or two about the world of competitive fi gure skating. She was a senior lady who trained in Colorado Springs,
Colorado, under Christy Krall and Damon Allen. She cofounded the UCLA Intercollegiate Figure Skating Team, and now she coaches in California. She’s combining her years of skating experience and her passion for fi lm and acting to produce and act in Ice The Movie, set to debut next winter.
Bullock originally wrote the screenplay for a UCLA class, but fully com- mitted to her dream of producing an authentic skating movie last year. In December she began fi lming on location in Colorado, where she had skated as a child.
“A lot of my old coaches that I worked with and the skating community there were very receptive to the fi lm and us being there,” Bullock, 24, said.
The fi lm follows the journey of two sisters — Olympic hopefuls — who train under coach Gavin Veerrak, who acts as their surrogate father. Bull- ock said the movie’s message is as much about authentically portraying the real ups and downs of fi gure skating as it is about realizing how price- less the bonds skaters form while training and competing together truly are.
The movie features some familiar faces, including Peter Carruthers and Alissa Czisny. Bullock said the fi lm is laid out so that everyone — from beginning skaters to elite competitors — can relate to it. She’s excited to share it with the skating community that she describes as passionate and supportive.
Mirai Nagasu and Nathan Chen took time out of their busy training schedules to perform for the Skating Club of Jackson Hole and the entire Jackson Hole (Wyo- ming) community at their annual holiday spectacular production titled “A Winter Wonderland on Ice.” Both star athletes spent time sign- ing autographs and meeting their adoring fans.

Detroit-area skating clubs joined together to entertain guests at Detroit Zoo’s annual Wild Lights winter celebration. This year, the Detroit Zoo installed an artifi cial ice rink outside the Penguin House, where skaters per- formed for guests. Skating on the artifi cial ice was diff erent for most skaters, but they all had a great time, Claudia Saliba of New Edge FSC, said.
Park City Icing of Park City, Utah, recently performed to a spectacular backdrop in Midway, Utah. The Park City Figure Skating Club has three synchronized skating teams, with girls ranging in age from 5 to 14. The girls in the yellow dresses constitute the pre-juvenile team. Their coaches are Erika Roberts, Hale Smith, Margaret Baldwin and Morgan Irwin.
