Using the sciences to teach volleyball in grade school USA Volleyball sanctions STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) sports program


IN 2016, USA VOLLEYBALL BECAME THE SECOND OLYMPIC sport to sanction the STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Sports program. This engaging educational enrichment program includes an eight (8) module curriculum that is equal parts education, athletics and exercise. Rooted in Next Generation Science Standards, the STEM Sports Volleyball program is flexible and can be implemented in a classroom setting, through after-school enrichment programs, or within a summer camp model. This program was designed for Grades 5-8 but depending on the environment, could be used for older or younger student groups. Participating students receive a STEM education while simultane- ously learning the science behind the sport of volleyball. Curriculum modules include such topics as calculating total contact time and opti- mal serve speed. Additionally, each student has access to a vol- leyball-themed “Kit” consisting of a teacher manual, sporting equipment and other necessary items for teachers to properly implement the program.


STEM VOLLEYBALL KITS It’s recommended that each


STEM Volleyball Kit serve no more than 12 students or six pairs of students. Kits can be used numerous times. In addi- tion to the teacher’s manual, a single volleyball kit includes six Molten First Touch volleyballs, six Molten Soft Touch volley- balls, six Molten Camp volley- balls, and one P&G Inflatable GO PLAY! ball. Additionally, each kit includes one Bushnell radar gun, six ribbon spools, six rolls of blue painter’s tape, one ball pump, one package of ball needles, one package of 12-inch latex balloons, one weight scale, six 100-inch tape measures, one box of 500 toothpicks, one package of 100 straws, one spool of fishing line, and two Molten SPB ball bags. Each Kit is priced at $999 and includes shipping.


CURRICULUM The volleyball curriculum consists of eight modules that can be completed in any order. Lesson topics include: (1) Court and Mathematics, (2) Using Technology, (3) Serving and Science, (4) Scientific Method, (5) Volleyball Properties, (6) Calculating Total Contact Time, (7) Optimal Serve Speed, (8) Engineering Design Process.

struggling fiscally to obtain new equipment, keeps the tools to make vol- leyball the most popular activity in the school. No longer will kids stand in long lines to hit a ball or watch the one ball fly over the net between two huge groups. They will now be able to borrow a ball or two for recess, and even if there is no net set up, the kids who want to learn can play the “Loser Becomes the Net” game – no matter if only three kids want to play.
