Cored holes support the complex core assembly.
• Cored holes are required to sup- port and locate the complex core assembly inside the mold cavity.
• Core print size and locations are designed to support the core’s weight, hydrodynamic forces from liquid metal during fi lling and pressurization and to provide vent- ing for the core gases generated during the casting process.
3-D-printed sand core technology enables complex core features.
• T e cored features of the tank have back draft and would be impossible to draw from conventional tool- ing and assemble together.
• 3-D-printing sand cores is a tooling-free process, which allows for the production of complex confi gu- rations as long as a 3-D model exists and un-printed sand can be removed after the 3-D printing is over.
• Conventional casting methodologies, principles and rigging still are key in making sound castings using 3-D-printed cores and molds.
