IM Akshat Chandra, 2015 National High School Champion
National High School Championship With record numbers such as those just
detailed, there is little wonder that on the boards the competition has been a battle- ground for young talent and rising chess stars. At the National High School Champi- onship, a multitude of young experts and masters had the chance to be in one room and strive for top honors, and with seven rounds in five sections, the players needed to draw not only upon their chess knowl -

edge, but also upon their endurance. In the K-12 Championship section, a
clear winner did not emerge until the very end. Tension was rising as the last round’s pairings came up; all four players on the top two boards were tied with a 51
⁄2 score,
and they were followed by 18 other players just half a point away. On board one, top- seeded IM Akshat Chandra from New Jersey had the white pieces against California’s
IM Kesav Viswanadha, while on board two, Kapil Chandran from Connecticut was paired against another Californian, FM Cameron Wheeler. As the games intensified, board two suddenly finished their game with a draw by agree ment. Thus, a decisive score on board one would mean that the winner of this match would be the sole champion with 61 round event.
