Summer camps are the perfect time to ‘play’

Editor’s Note: This is a portion of

the Kyle Dake Q&A originally published in WIN Magazine’s June 3, 2016 issue. WIN: Talk about summer

camps. Help coaches and families in picking a good summer camp? DAKE: I would tend to

encourage people to go to technique camps or a team camp. It’s important to have the right mindset, you need to “play wrestle” in a lot of different positions. You’ve heard that a lot of times from guys at Cornell and Cael Sanderson also talks a lot about (play wrestling). Just sparring in general is really good. When both guys are just seeing

opportunities to open up, and just going for it, that’s really good. Team camps are good too because you get a lot of matches in a short amount of time, and it’s pretty laid back. The best thing is just assessing what you need personally. WIN: How would you direct

coaches in regards to getting in folk- style training vs. freestyle and Greco time over the off-season? DAKE: I think wrestling free-

style and Greco are hugely important for all folkstyle wrestlers in terms of body awareness. In folkstyle, you can get away with a lot of sloppy, OD]\ À QLVKHV EHFDXVH LW ZRUNV RQ percent of the guys. That may only work on 20 percent of the guys in freestyle. It (the Olympic styles) VKRZV \RX GLIIHUHQW ZD\V RI À QLVKLQJ and different ways to approach the sport.

If it wasn’t for freestyle and

Greco, I probably wouldn’t have been wrestling in college. I was pretty good just wrestling folkstyle. As soon as I started wrestling freestyle, EHWZHHQ P\ À IWK DQG VL[WK JUDGH years, I got a lot better. Every summer after that, I

only wrestled freestyle and Greco. The next year I’d come back in the wrestling room and feel so much better than the year before. I think freestyle and Greco make a huge, huge difference in people’s ability to peak in folkstyle. WIN: If your son was a senior

to be and was a higher-level recruit, KRZ ZRXOG \RX DGYLVH KLP LQ À QGLQJ D JRRG FROOHJH À W"

Home Unit Kyle Dake DAKE: It really depends on

what you’re looking for. Who are you as a person and what are you expecting to get out of your college experience? If your goal is to meet a lot of people and go to a school with a big football team, and go and tailgate, you need to factor that in (to your decision). But maybe you want to go to

a smaller school and town where you get to know everybody in town. Those priorities can change as you’re going through high school. The con- tributing factor for me was I wanted a smaller place to go.

“If it wasn’t for freestyle and Greco, I probably wouldn’t have been wrestling in college.”

Getting back to the wrestling

part, if you’re not a blue-chip guy or are ranked in the top 100, you may have to “shop” yourself around a bit. I know that’s not exactly what you want to do. A lot of people have a hard

time bragging about themselves to high-level coaches. But it’s important, DQG \RX UHDOO\ KDYH WR À JXUH RXW ZKDW NLQG RI VFKRRO À W \RX·UH ORRNLQJ IRU $QG À QGLQJ WKH ULJKW SODFH WR call home for your college is more important than the money aspect of it too. I think going somewhere just because of money is short sighted. (Upgrade your USAW membership
