COLA Perspectives In reference to the minuscule COLA increase, due to a stagnant [Consumer Price Index (CPI)], i.e., 0.3 percent: I remarked long ago, before I ever saw it in print, that the CPI was unduly in- fl uenced by the low cost of gas. I said it then, and still say it, that COLA goes almost totally to veterans, citizens on Social Security, and the disabled. It is obvious that that group of people no longer commute or take distant vaca- tions and otherwise drive minimally, e.g., don’t consume gas, no matter how inexpensive. This is another example of how the lack of veterans serving in Congress means that we are underrepresented in making these kinds of decisions.
