The War at Home: A Wife’s Search for Peace (and Other Missions Impos- sible). By Rachel Starnes. Penguin Books, 2016. $16. ISBN 978-0-14310-866-5.

Spouse Scholarships

The National Military Family Association (NMFA) offers scholarships for military spouses to assist with career funding, degrees, and clinical supervi- sion toward licensure in the mental health profes- sion. Spouses also can apply for funding to build their own business, including LLCs, direct sales, franchises, contracting, and other for-profit ventures. The deadline to apply for financial assistance is

Sunday, Jan. 15. Those eligible for scholarships include: spouses

with a valid military ID card; spouses married to an active duty, Reserve, Guard, retired, medically retired, wounded, or fallen servicemember; dual-service mili- tary spouses; divorced spouses (restrictions apply); and spouses married when NMFA validates applica- tions, usually one month after applications close. For more information and to read additional eligibil- ity requirements, visit bit.ly/2edzcHS.

Military spouses do not get enough recognition for the sac- rifi ces they make and the hardships they endure, especially when their ser- vicemembers have danger- ous jobs and are deployed to dangerous places. Rachel Starnes is mar- ried to a Navy fi ghter pilot, and her story will resonate with her fellow military spouses. This is a powerful memoir, funny, poignant, sad, and tender, as she candidly describes being a newly wed Navy wife and trying to fi nd her own identity in a confus- ing environment of rules, regulations, and frequent moves.

She describes the lone- liness of long-distance separations while coping as best she can with babies, the minefi eld of spouses’ clubs, and constant worry, trying to maintain her mar- riage through emails and Skype. She also acknowl- edges she suff ered from de- pression but has emerged

as a stronger woman with a stronger marriage.

The Frozen Chosen: The 1st Marine Division and the Battle of the Chosin Res- ervoir. By Thomas McKelvey Cleaver. Osprey, 2016. $28. ISBN 978-1-47281-436-4.

The legend- ary battle of the 1st Marine Division against doz- ens of Red Chinese

infantry divisions at the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea during the bitterly cold winter of 1950 is one of the few highlights of the Korean War. Acclaimed historian Thomas McKelvey Cleaver presents an excellent his- tory as he describes the high-level political and military ignorance that ordered Marine Corps and Army units to move “for- ward into the greatest mili- tary ambush ever planned.” He tells how U.S. Army and South Korean units were surprised and dis- persed by hordes of Red Chinese soldiers and how the 1st Marine Division was surrounded in the Chosin’s mountainous, frozen terrain, fi ghting in close combat in subzero temperatures against a well-led Communist army. — William D.
