April is National Autism Awareness Month.
Children born to older
parents are at a higher risk for having ASD.
Almost half
(46%) of children identified with ASD have average to
above-average intel- lectual ability.
ASD is almost
more common among boys (1 in 42) than among girls (1 in 189).

Many parents of children with ASD notice a
developmental problem before their child’s first birthday. A diag- nosis of autism at age 2 can be reliable, valid, and stable.

P Pomegranate Positives
omegranate juice is an increasingly popular drink, and pomegranate seeds — which some- times can be purchased already separated from the
fruit — are a colorful, crunchy punctuation in dishes from meat sauce to rice pilaf to chilled summer salads. Animal studies show pomegranate has antibacterial and antiviral eff ects and might off er other health benefi ts, including the reduction of high blood pressure and high cholesterol, according to information from the National Institutes of Health. It’s an anti-infl ammatory and anti- oxidant, and pomegranate fruit extracts appear to prevent cell growth and possibly promote apoptosis (programmed cell death), giving them anticarcinogenic eff ects as well. Pomegranate’s polyphenols help ward off skin damage. The bark, root, and fruit of pomegranate already are used medicinally in Asia and the Middle East. More human studies are needed, but the simple fact that pomegranate is high in vitamin C is a recommendation. One caution: Like grapefruit juice, pomegranate juice can interact with some medicines and make them less eff ective. —Marilyn Pribus
