Korean War Remembrance It was very satisfying to read ([Pages of History], “Remembrance Wall Planned,” in the February 2016 issue) the reference to the Korean Augmen- tation to the U.S. Army (KATUSA). I was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War. By the time I was assigned to Company B of the 1092 Engineer Battalion, the cease- fire was in effect. Each squad in our company had a KATUSA soldier assigned to it. They served with us for a six-month period before being rotated back to their Republic of Korea (ROK) unit and replaced by another ROK soldier. The KATUSA [assigned to] our squad, when I arrived, was a young, hardworking Korean soldier. Our days were spent on the primitive Korean roads with pickax and shovel. He wanted to learn English, and I spent evenings in our squad tent tutoring him in our alphabet. He was particularly confused by the difference between our cursive and block letters.


Some mention should also be
