The Tarantella dates to the Middle Ages and is still the most popular folk dance of southern Italy. Tarantella means “little spider” and according to legend, the dance came about after residents of the province of Taranto were bitten by spiders. Once bitten, the Tarenti would jump up, run outside, and suddenly begin to dance with “great excitement” to dance the poison out before they died! Go crazy dancing the Tarantella in Sorrento!
