ave you ever lived where January brings snow? Have you ever looked out at a white

world and sensed its quiet and peace? Ahh, I imagine this while I type during mid-80 temperatures in sunny Florida. No matter where you reside, winter is the time for reassessing, meditation, making plans, discarding bad habits and

adopting good ones. Rest and restoration are my goals this season. I’m reminded that “if we don’t deal with stress, Stress will deal with us.” Too often we choose to numb ourselves to hide from overwhelming situations. Don Shetterly shares how numbing only prolongs true happiness. (See p.17 and sign up for his Jan 30 workshop.) Procrastination also causes stress. Diane Ross is offering an “Overcoming Procrastination” workshop on January 12 (p.11). Not to be missed! Happiness and love are real needs—Happiness does not come from material wealth. Actually, an over-abundance of money can quickly lead to mental illness and discontentment. If you disagree, check out the movie I AM (available on Netfl ix). Director of the humorous Ace Ventura and Bruce Almighty, Tom Shadyac shares how down-sizing and sharing (not competing) can make all the difference. The article “True Wealth” also offers ways to take a personal audit on page 24. My two favorite mantras have followed me for

years: “Simple Living Saves Lives” and “Less is More.” Practicing these daily reduces my need for elaborate New Year’s Resolutions. However, my number one resolution is to eat more locally-grown, seasonal food. Kissimmee Green Place (p. 10) offers weekly packages to make this really easy! Finally, as a nation, we are over-fed and under- nourished, moving farther away from our ancestors’ healthier diets and lifestyle. Our obsession with electronic devices and social media, unknown to our ancestors, also saps our energy and monopolizes (numbs) too much of our time. I hope you remember that some of our old ways—the simple ones—need not be discarded.
