Dedicated showroom launched to meet boom in women cyclists

and a bespoke service to ensure women get the right cycle for their needs, and the confidence to get full enjoyment from it.” This will be backed up by regular evening bike maintenance classes, and support for a series of rides for women, organised with Sport Cardiff. More women are taking to two wheels through Breeze, a female-only UK-wide cycling

programme

A £100,000 showroom specifically for women cyclists has been launched by a leading South Wales retailer. The move is prompted by a fast-growing number of women riders, fuelled by pro-active programmes by sports bodies such as Welsh Cycling and Sport Cardiff, which aim to boost women’s

confidence in cycling for sport and leisure. The showroom, at The Bike Shed’s recently- opened branch at Tongwynlais, north of Cardiff, is staffed by experienced

female

cyclists ready to provide expert advice. It is claimed to be the biggest showroom of its kind in Wales in terms of the

range of road bikes and equipment on display. John Higgins, director of The Bike Shed, which has its headquarters in Cathedral Road, Cardiff, said: “Working in partnership with Sport Cardiff and Welsh Cycling we are determined to provide the best professional advice on all aspects of cycling

aimed at helping women feel confident and comfortable about taking up cycling. The programme was launched in Wales two years ago by Welsh Cycling, funded by Sport Wales. In January Sport Cardiff will launch a membership scheme and on 14 January women and girls can enter a 10km ride from Pontcanna to Cardiff Bay. One of Cardiff’s longest established cycle dealers.

HRH The Duke of Cambridge takes over as WRU Patron

The Welsh Rugby Union has announced that His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge has become its new patron after Her Majesty The Queen stepped down from the patronage last month. The WRU thanked Her Majesty for her long-standing support of Welsh rugby. The Duke, who presented WRU president Dennis Gethin with his OBE last month, becomes Vice Royal Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union in February 2007 and later became Vice Patron following the death of Sir Tasker Watkins VC. Dennis Gethin OBE said, “We thank Her Majesty The Queen for her support of the Welsh Rugby Union over the years. “We are delighted that The Duke of Cambridge has taken over from his grandmother as Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union. Since becoming Vice Patron in 2007, His Royal Highness has been a great ambassador, not only for the Welsh Rugby Union, but for young people and for sport generally. “He makes a great difference to everyone he meets on his regular visits to Wales and to Principality Stadium, interacting with all kinds of individuals and groups including players past and present, volunteers, apprentices, veterans and staff. The Duke is also Patron of the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust which helps severely injured rugby players and their families. He is particularly generous in his help of this charity. We look forward to his presence and continued support in his new role as WRU Patron.”
