Young inventor recognised for his award- winning illuminating mudguard creation


A talented youngster from Llanishen has won fi rst place for his creative invention at this year’s WJEC’s Innovation Awards. Cellan Cox, 18, from Llanishen High School was named the best in the A level category and the overall winner of the event for his illuminating bicycle mudguard. The avid cyclist created his curved wooden mudguard lined with red LED strip lights on the side and a super bright LED on each end to help keep bike-users safe as well as clean. The Innovation Awards is an annual competition partly funded by the Welsh Government’s Department for the Economy and Infrastructure aimed at encouraging GCSE and A level students studying WJEC’s design technology courses to harness their imagination. The award ceremony took place at the Senedd before christmas and was attended by Kirsty Williams AM the Cabinet Secretary for Education. More than 80 young inventors presented their work to the judges earlier in the year at public exhibitions at the SSE Swalec Stadium in Cardiff and Bangor University, where visitors could catch a glimpse of the products of the future.
