Trago takes shape at Merthyr

The brand new £40m Trago Mills retail and leisure store is progressing at a pace, now in week 18 the project team have already erected 1100 tonnes of steel.

Situated adjacent to the Cyfarthfa Retail Park, the new store is due to open in Spring 2018. The main 200k sq ft retail outlet will stock almost 200,000 lines, from toys, to kitchen ware, sports equipment, clothes and furniture the range is vast. The development will also include a choice of cafés, garden centre, bandstand, and adventure activity dome. The fi rst phase will also include a fuel station, with plans for a substantial family fun park to follow shortly thereafter. In just 18 weeks you can clearly see this exciting project taking shape, so far the team have laid 12,350m2 of Tarmac in the car parks and 5,100m2 of Tarmac on the roads, erected 44 % of the total 2500 tonnes of steel which is the equivalent to the weight of 87 (12.65 T /1100T = 87) double decker buses. The steel frames on four of the buildings have now been completed; the fi nal buildings will be completed by the end of June 2017. The steel has been fabricated by Hayes Engineering from Cardiff who employ 130 people and been established since 1994. The steel has been supplied by Rainham Steel from Essex, 70% of the steel has been produced in the UK.

Jason Taylor Operations Director, Kier Construction, Western & Wales said: “supporting the UK steel industry has never been more important and the Trago scheme provides a great opportunity to do this. We always keep our supply chain as local as is possible and this fi ts very well with the ethos of Trago Mills, a very British institution. The project generates employment opportunities locally throughout the build programme and when the store opens in 2018, its great news for Merthyr and we are delighted to

be delivering the new store” Trago, which has remained at the vanguard of discount retailing for over 50 years, was founded in the mid 1960s in Cornwall by Mike Robertson, father of the current owner and Chairman, Bruce Robertson. It currently has three stores, at Liskeard (the fi rst store to be built) and Falmouth in Cornwall, together with its fl agship store near Newton Abbot in Devon. This will be Trago’s fi rst ever Welsh location and the fi rst site outside Cornwall and Devon.

The retail park will comprise a 30,250 square metre building, with warehousing, support services and administrative offi ces, together with internal roads and car parking. The new store will incorporate many of the retailer’s signature styles, including 17 ‘Trago Towers’. An important development for the town and local economy, the new store will not only provide job opportunities during construction but, once completed, will create around 400 jobs in the retail, leisure and warehousing sectors.
