NEWPORT CRICKET’S GOLDEN TICKET FOR NEW WICKET


Newport Cricket Club has been bowled over by a £1,000 donation to help pay for a new artificial wicket. Te Spytty Park club has been handed the giſt from leading Llantrisant-based housebuilder Persimmon Homes East Wales. Te club, which has 13 boys and girls teams as well as seniors, wants to install a £10,000 artificial wicket so that cricket can be played whatever the weather. Te donation comes as part of Persimmon Homes’ Community Champions scheme. Each month, the national housebuilder donates up to £2,000 to community groups and good causes in every one its 29 regional business. Tat’s a total of almost £700,000 a year. Club chairman Mike Knight said: “We are extremely grateful to Persimmon Homes for this generous donation. “Te current wicket has been down for many years and it is no longer fit for purpose. “Our club is used extensively by our juniors, three Asian teams and disabled cricketers, as well as local schools and running clubs. “Tis artificial wicket will ensure that all of these groups get to play as much as possible.” Te club has pledged £2,000 and has raised a further £5,000. Tis donation from Persimmon edges the club close to its target. Housebuilder ploughing Millions into West Wales


A Swansea-based builder has revealed it has contributed almost £500,000 into the area in the last 12 months – with more than £3million to come this year.


Persimmon Homes West Wales, the regional branch of the housebuilding giant, builds around 600 houses a year in Swansea, Neath, Llanelli, Cross Hands, Carmarthen, Bridgend, Pembroke and Milford Haven. Persimmon agrees to contribute huge sums on money towards things like highways, education and open spaces through Section 106 agreements during the planning process. In the last 12 months the company has paid out £422,568.75. A further £3,384,739 is pledged in the coming months. Andy Baker-Edwards,

Persimmon Homes paid £190,125.50 for education, public open space, highways and off-site affordable housing.

Persimmon will then pay a further £181,362 in two equal instalments of £90,681 once a certain number of properties have been occupied. The largest contribution to come will be at Dol yr Ysgol in Bridgend, where Persimmon is contributing £391,512 towards education in the area, £75,000 towards travel, £7,000 for new Road Traffic Orders, £50,760 for public open space and £637,728 towards off-site affordable housing.


Other Section 106 contributions: Martello Park, Pembroke: £148,754 paid in December 2016. A further £177,508 to come to cover highways, education and community infrastructure in two equal instalments of £88,754 upon occupation of the 80th and 120th dwellings. Cwrt y Llwyfen, Johnstown: £371,834 paid early 2017 on top of £371,834 in 2015 for education, highways and public open space. A final contribution of £371,834 will be paid upon 75 per cent of occupation. Gower View Road, Swansea: £83,689.25 paid early 2016 for education and highways. A further £378,801 to be paid later this year for affordable housing. Persimmon has built 14 affordable properties. Brackla West, Bridgend: £103,400 agreed for public open space – and a further education contribution to be calculated when the site is 50 per cent occupied and is payable upon 50 per cent and 75 per cent occupation. Mariner’s Walk, SA1: 10 per cent affordable apartments on-site – six in total.
