and we just ran out of a little bit of steam. That can happen to sides.
If you look at Yorkshire they didn’t seem to have the momentum early on in the tournament yet they finished it in a better shape to how they started it. It’s how you can build that run and sustain your form but we had some encouraging signs in that.
I wouldn’t say we were strongest in T20 if you look at the first four games we played in the 50 over competition we blew sides away there. There was a natural break in white ball cricket which we never really reacted to as well as we would have liked. We sustained some injuries to the playing staff last year that hurt us and I believe if we can get everyone fit on the field and in confident mood then we are a match for any team.
Nye had moments that made the year very memorable for him, to get 1,000 runs in first-class cricket in his debut year was a fantastic achievement and he showed signs of some destructive innings in the T20 but the 50 oner comp didn’t go his way. He’s a young man learning the game, so that was encouraging. In the four-day format, Kiran Carlson came in and did really well with a fifer and a hundred which was impressive. Some of David Lloyd’s innings were Aaron Finch like which was a real confidence boost for him and the players around him.
Colin Ingram was the standout performer in all T20 cricket and one-day cricket. Along with Jacques those two are not just fine cricketers, but fine people
as well and when I look at players walking on to the field with those two amongst them, plus Michael Hogan, I know there are some really good pillars on the field, wise decision makers.
Timm van der Gugten had a terrific first season. Timm has got the ability to move the ball both ways, he bowls at a very brisk pace and he is a good kid. It was a breakthrough season for him because up until last season he didn’t play much cricket so he and we were a little apprehensive about the amount of cricket he would play, but he got through it all and I’m sure he is hoping for a similar season.
I’d love to see the city franchise competition happen. It’s a competition that means the game is evolving and staying up with how life is moving forward and if we don’t take it on then it suggests we are just happy treading water. It’s what the world wants, it is a unique brand of cricket and for us to keep up with the hype and keep the players turned on and the supporters and sponsors interested, I believe it is a must for the game. I’m not sure what the team would be called but I’m confident in the people and operations and experience and support structure that this club and Cardiff can put together to ensure if we were a base I’m confident we could deliver.
Welsh people love seeing brilliant sport and I’m sure with the quality of cricketer and quality of sportsmen on this field it goes well together, Wales and brilliant sport suit each other.
