EXECUTIVE HIRE SHOW REVIEW

The DUU/C-SDT blade has been added to the Ultra range.

Dynamic DURO

DURO UK continues to expand its range of diamond blades and related products. Alan Guthrie reports.

DURO UK dates back to 2003. It was originally founded as DTAS, specialising in the distribution of diamond blades and abrasives under the DURO brand, by which the company became better known, and it adopted that name in 2008. The business is run by brothers Paul and Lee Morewood, respectively MD and Sales Director, who both previously worked for several other diamond products suppliers, including Flexovit and Tyrolit.

“DURO complements our sister business, Yokota UK,” Lee Morewood told EHN. “Yokota UK was established by our father, Brian, in 1992, and originally specialised in distributing air tools to industries such as offshore

drilling, steel fabrication and the foundry industry.

However, tools appropriate to the construction and hire markets were later introduced, from Yokota and other brands like Toku and Red Rooster, following the demise of the distributors Oswald Record and Leach Lewis. Yokota has also built a relationship with Trelawny, being confirmed as UK distributor last year for its floor preparation equipment including grinders, planers, scabblers and compactors.”

DURO has been busy developing its diamond blade and core drill ranges. “We now offer four options in each line-up, namely Base, Standard, Plus and Ultra, indicating their rating from entry-level to the highest performance. Hirers need to be aware of the latest technology, rather than seeing these products as commodities. Obviously, hirers will deal with some tradesmen who simply want a budget blade for one job, but we offer a variety of options to enable users to select the most appropriate one, including for specialist applications.

“The product packaging also clearly states typical applications and performance data, as well as safety equipment and other items users might need like dust suppression equipment, which we also provide. We carry extensive stocks at our Sheffield headquarters and offer fast delivery.”

New launches at the Show included the DUU/C-SDT blade for cutting concrete, an addition to the Ultra range. It incorporates ‘Spaced Diamond Technology’ for the accurate placement of diamond particles throughout the segments which is said to increase both performance and blade life by up to 30%. Also new is the DSBM-PT which joins the Base line-up and incorporates characteristics found on higher-specification variants such as taller ‘turbo’ segments and angled gullets. A new range of coated abrasives were also displayed, for use with floor sanders, orbital sanders and grinding tools. An addition to the Yokota portfolio is a new heavy-duty 5kg hammer.

As we reported in our January/February issue, DURO has acquired Pontypridd-based Pegasus Diamond Products following the retirement of founder and owner, Alan Wells who, incidentally, was Paul Morewood’s first sales manager at another business more than 30 years ago. Pegasus products will be absorbed into the Duro line-up, and Sales Director Chris Callan has joined the business as Area Sales Manager for the south and south-west of England. Pegasus customers now have access to a broader offering from DURO and Yokota.

DURO has also made changes to the packaging for the 2-Stroke Oil fuel additive it offers for use in engines on cut-off saws, floor saws and garden machinery. The product is offered in 5-litre and 1-litre bottles, as well as a 100ml ‘one-shot’ bottle for treating a 5-litre can of petrol. Regarding the latter, hirers were reporting that having a replaceable screw cap on the 100ml bottles was enabling some operators to add less oil than is recommended and retain the remainder, leading to mechanical failures. To address this, a new 100ml sachet has been introduced, so that the entire contents have to be used. DURO has also

developed a new counter-top display that holds up to 25 sachets.
