EXECUTIVE HIRE SHOW REVIEW

Altrad Belle launched a new generator range at the Show.

Belle power

Altrad Belle is targeting a new market and re-entering another. Alan Guthrie reports on the manufacturer’s latest product developments.

Altrad Belle certainly fulfilled its intention to develop two new product lines in time for the Show, as we reported in the Preview in our January/February issue. It has also launched a number of new or modified machines within its existing ranges.

The new pressure washer line-up comprises four models.

Visitors were able to inspect a new range of open set petrol generators.

MD Ray Neilson recognises that this is a well-served market, but says the new models are specifically designed to meet hire industry needs. “Hirers have been asking us for these and we have responded. Many people will remember that Belle used to make generators in the past, until 2004 when the market became saturated with cheap imports. We know of sets dating back to that time that are still working in hire fleets, and our new models are similarly designed for heavy-duty usage and performance.”

The RPX 35 offers more power than its predecessor.

Machines include the GPX2700, GPX3400 and GPX5000, rated at 2.7kVA, 3.4kVA and 5kVA respectively. Each has a Honda engine and large-diameter protective frames. A bottom plate is fitted to avoid damage during transport, which also gives stability on soft ground. “We have drawn on our experience of manufacturing a wide range of products. We have modern tube-bending and robotic welding machines at our factory in Sheen, and we have adopted design characteristics from other equipment, such as using four over-sized anti-vibration mounts for the engine and alternator. We can also paint products in customers’ colours. The frames incorporate a single-point lifting eye, and units can be stacked together using a patented clip system to facilitate storage, enhance protection and minimise manual handling risks.”

The brand new product line is a range of pressure washers. Models include the PWX 08/180, PWX 13/230 and the PWX 15/250, with numbers denoting the flow rate in litres per minute followed by the bar pressure. Each has a Honda petrol engine, and the PWX 15/250 is also available with a Yanmar diesel option. “Again, we have developed these following feedback from customers,” said Ray Neilson. “Our engineers spotted the manufacturing fit with pressure washers. We were familiar with the engines that we already used on other products, and had the necessary metalwork expertise derived from making hydraulic power packs with robust frames and a convenient place to store the hoses. A single lift point is incorporated and a hose reel option is available. The transport handles can be folded and locked in place, and the pumps are made by Inter of Italy.”

Hirers were also able to inspect the new RPX 35 reversible compaction plate which supersedes the RPC 30. Altrad Belle says it offers greater power, has a faster travel speed and can climb steeper gradients. It is also said to perform better on cohesive materials. Electric start is incorporated along with integral wheels, and the throttle is conveniently mounted on the handlebar. New ‘floating’ low- vibration handles are also fitted.

The Duo 350X is a twin-bladed floor saw for digging narrow trenches for cable installation and similar tasks, with a cutting width of 100mm. This gives faster results, keeps the trench sides parallel and reduces the need for reinstatement work. A guard encloses the blades, and a removable water tank with a depth gauge is incorporated.

Finally, an upgraded version of the PCLX 320 ‘Streetworks’ plate compactor was unveiled at the Show. Its baseplate is now made from a high-performance steel, called Strenx, and has a Hardox wear plate that can be removed and replaced separately. Altrad Belle’s design engineers have obviously been kept busy, and they intend to remain so, as more new additions to the line-up are scheduled to be launched at Plantworx in June.
