THE LAST CAMPAIGN I

N the weeks running up to the General Election on May 7 veteran photographer Gerry McCann spent several days on the campaign trail with Charles Kennedy as he fought to defend the parliamentary seat he had held for 32 years.

As one of the last photographers to spend any time with the former Lib Dem leader and much respected MP he saw first hand how much the 55-year-old politician was respected and admired, even by his political opponents.

He travelled with the politician and his team to Ullapool, Dingwall and Strathpeffer to document the events of the election batle.

“I was in contact with Charles for about a month in the run up to the election and he invited me to accompany him on several occasions as he campaigned across his constituency,” said Gerry.

“Although it had been a long time since I had photographed him, at least 10 or 15 years, he appeared to remember me - or at least he acted as though he knew me - and made me

very welcome.” :Gerry McCann

“It quickly became clear that Charles Kennedy was a very approachable man and was well liked by the majority of people in Ross and Lochaber.

“I went with him to Ullapool to photograph him at a village hall. Even though there wasn’t a big crowd he was just as passionate and animated in front of them as he was with bigger audiences.
