Meeting the expectations head on


In today’s business world, the role of a credit professional is a high-pressure position, but you need to stick to your beliefs

In the ‘modern’ day we live in, we are constantly driven to strive for results and to achieve these in the shortest possible lead time. We are driven by many elements such as


financial gain, title, and being top of the pile to achieve the goal. But, once achieved, we go back and start


again and the constant grind begins again. So it is important to understand that now, more than ever, we are under extreme pressures to deliver on these targets. Expectations are constantly increasing so,


with that the case, are we compromising our skill sets in order to achieve?


Going rogue I still believe that, as managers or team leaders, we can prevent someone going rogue to the detriment of the team, to achieve our goals. We should still strive to ensure that we


maintain our personal standards for the good of the department or team. Keeping good business ethics and practices


means maintaining the communication, and relationships – both internal and external. I have personally experienced situations


where team members have demonstrated their lack of awareness, sensitivity, and team ethos by ignoring tasks that they could partake in to assist a colleague. The proper ethos, mentality, or mantra –


however you dress it up – should always start from the top and then it should be passed on. A team is a reflection of their leaders, just as children are a reflection of their parents. The comparisons certainly ring true, but occasionally I think there is a role reversal!

A significant bearing Whether we achieve that goal, or ultimately not, our behaviour and conduct will have a significant bearing on our achievements and results, and the manner of communication is vital in the final analysis. I do not like to quote or paraphrase, but


from a famous film the line is: “With great power comes great responsibility.” In the business markets, we are now faced


with, there are sterner challenges, not only in our skill set, but with our way of conducting ourselves to the client. We all know we cannot adopt a European


style of collecting money for Asian, African, or Middle Eastern clients, as the culture already predetermines that we are more respectful and subservient in how we conduct ourselves towards them. Culture plays an important part in this,


It has to do with the upbringing and the culture that you are brought up in, as habits will always impress on people, whether they are good or bad, and it is about getting to the goal


I will leave that one to you all to ponder,


but you will hopefully get the gist of what I am trying to say. It has to do with the upbringing and the

so we have to ensure that we already understand this before we attempt to engage. As they say: “doing your home work” is vital. Take pride in what you do, whatever the


importance or size of the task. It can often be a question of less speed and


more haste, as I still believe it is the quality, and not the quantity, that will get you over the line. We can still deliver with style, panache,


and poise, not rudeness and arrogance. Always remember that, if you enjoy the


challenge more, it does not become a chore. It also means you are more aligned within your self mentally and spiritually to deliver. The reward comes from within, and is


more self-gratifying. Bless you all and be happy! CCR
