New Boats Table Forza!
Up-and-coming Italian designer Matteo Polli is making the most of his relationship with Italia Yachts with one more addition to a growing list of ORC challengers Italia 12.98
Once again an Italian design studio has come up with a good-looking cruiser-racer with more than the usual attention paid to competitiveness under the ORC (and also IRC) rules. Genuine dual-purpose boats are not easy to achieve, despite the numerous claims, and to pull one off successfully requires a great deal of detailed development and calculation by the design studio, all allied to diligent manufacturing control on the part of the builder. It is no use creating an excellent hull and good rig if it is all then ‘sunk’ by weight overruns – especially in the interior. The design of the new 12.98 leans heavily on Polli’s experience with the successful Italia 9.98 Fuoriserie that he launched 12 months ago and which has proved a serious contender on the ORC circuit. Once again Polli has turned to an efficient low draft reverse T-keel configuration below the waterline, plus a relatively large rudder for ease of control in challenging conditions. The T-keel works efficiently and is also smiled upon by the current ORC VPP. The sail plan is generous and when coupled with a light-medium displacement results in a relatively high power to weight ratio.
Certainly the Mediterranean and Adriatic influence is seen here, mirroring what is found the other side of the Atlantic with boats designed for the light airs of Long Island Sound; but with plenty of both form and mechanical stability, plus those large foils, the Italia 12.98 should still remain balanced and controllable when the skies clear and the Mistral kicks in. Big non-overlapping jibs have been chosen to further improve light wind performance. For downwind sails the choice is open to the customer; racing around the cans the best option would be spinnakers, whereas asymmetric sails will be the optimal choice for cruising and offshore racing.

Matteo Polli’s Italia 12.98 reflects the sort of nice dual-purpose yacht that if well campaigned still offers you a shot at the silverware in ORC races. Until someone commissions a full-on ORC racer this healthy situation will continue. But then…
The deck layout has been designed for racing efficiency with plentiful sail controls and a powerful German mainsheet system. And a good racing deck layout does, as we have learnt, usually make for an effective cruising set-up (sadly of course the converse is not always true!). See also:
