The Ouessant Race in August will take boats west from Cowes to Wolf Rock, south around Ouessant (Ushant to some) – leav- ing it to port or starboard, as you choose – thence east to finish in St Malo. In my view, this race is destined to become a mini classic; it is already generating much early excitement. Other 2016 events to note are the biennial Round Ireland Race, with Rambler88a confirmed entrant, and a long overdue European IRC championship – taking place at Volvo Cork Week. The Commodore’s inbox contains much correspondence on the above subjects as well as a rich variety of other messages ranging from the heartwarming to the heart-wrench- ing. Heartwarming have been the compliments to our race team of professionals and volunteers: ‘Thank you and the RORC team for a memorable Fastnet’  ‘The attention from the staff at the Cowes clubhouse was exemplary’  ‘Your shore team was outstanding’  ‘I am proud to be a RORC member’


And the heart-wrenching are the stories of mishaps and tragedies on the ocean. October brought the extremely sad news of the loss at sea off Croatia of Mohammed Al Alawi, a crewmember on Musandam-Oman Sail. She was a Rolex Fastnet participant this year and a RORC Round Britain and Ireland record- breaker from 2014. We extend our deepest sympathy to Mohammed’s family, to Sidney Gavignet, her skipper, and her crew, as well as to David Graham and his fine team at Oman Sail.

Commodore’s letter


ith the ending of a busy 2015 season our thoughts turn to next year and, in the mean- time, to getting to sea in warmer climates. Our Programme and Race Committee plans two years ahead and we now have provisional dates through to early-2018. In the near term, our winter highlights include our Transatlantic Race from Lanzarote to Grenada and the RORC Caribbean 600, with entries already up 40 per cent on this time last year. The Brewin Dolphin Commodores’ Cup will be centre-stage in Cowes in July 2016 and we are working hard to expand the number of country teams, including from outside Europe. There is already good French interest and Ireland is planning a strong defence after its 2014 victory. Our 2016 inshore programme will feature the Vice Admiral’s Cup, Cowes Keelboat Champion - ship, Tiny Mitchell Trophy, Stug Perry Trophy, Quarter Ton Cup, XOD Telegraph Bowl, Cowes Week, Arrow Trophy and Trafalgar Regatta – a feast of inshore racing.

Past RORC offshore programmes have covered many courses different from our current programme – who remembers the Falmouth to Kingstown race? Now we are proposing a new and, I believe, very attractive course for 2016.
