After a successful 10-year career the Extreme 40s (above) will no doubt find themselves sailing again in 2016 as they offer a turnkey package for new events – especially in emerging sailing nations. Meanwhile, the change to the GC32s (top) has met with the approval of all the sailors currently involved, as a perfect step forward for both the impact of the series and for the excitement of the racing
recent Extreme 40 campaigns. Purchase price (ex VAT and sails) is €275,000 with the charter option also available. SH: Estimated annual campaign cost? AT: The running costs for the teams will, during the transition to the GC32s, remain comparable to the current season budgets. That is to say, approximately €800,000; but that includes everything. SH: How do the detail costs compare with campaigning an Extreme 40 this year? AT: All the running costs are directly comparable with a team entry in 2015. SH: And with an AC45F… AT: (Laughing) you could run the whole GC32 Extreme Sailing Series fleet off a single AC45 budget. It’s the America’s Cup… Both events hold a very distinct and

important position at the top of the sailing world but, unlike the Cup, the Extreme Sailing Series has always been a commer- cial and sponsor-driven event, committed to delivering ROI for our partners. That remains at our core and we continue to build these relationships. SH: So how many GC32s do you anticipate hosting in 2016? AT: The minimum is eight boats, the same as it has been for the past five years. We expect to see nine or 10 entries over the season plus a local wild card entry at each Act. Plenty for a spectacular line-up. SH: And what will be done with the existing Extreme 40s? AT: The Extreme 40 remains a fantastic platform and this won’t be the end of the
class. We are exploring the potential for invitational events for the 40s outside the Extreme Sailing Series calendar and there is a definite appetite for that. For example, Shanghai, Busan, the USA and also the Barcolana in Trieste. Last year we sailed an Extreme 40 on the Bund in Shanghai – they had never seen anything like it before and it had a huge impact. Likewise, in last year’s Bar- colana, approximately 300,000 people saw the Extreme 40s – there is definitely still an appetite for the class. Having more boats available also means that we can work on opening up new markets and increasing our presence in areas that are of particular importance to our partners. SH: How do you anticipate a team budget
