New Boats Table

Umberto Felci further advances the trademark Italian theme of speed with style Ice 52
For their new Ice52 the brief from Ice Yachts was for a synthesis between the fast Ice33, which has shown outstanding racing performance, and the classic Ice62 fast cruiser. We were asked to design an uncomplicated 52-footer that would be fast in real time but would still rate well under the IRC and ORC rules. The chosen hull features the same ‘chalice’ sections that we successfully applied to the Ice33. The emphasis is on a hull form that at low heel angles boasts the minimum possible wetted area but that quickly gains stability and power as the flare of the chalice is immersed when the boat loads up in a breeze; both characteristics that we believe should feature in a good modern yacht.
A high ballast ratio (all the ballast is in the keel) of 40 per cent also ensures good mechanical stability with a Limit of Positive Stability (LPS) of 128°. For reliability the Ice52 keel fin is made of Weldox700 steel with two fibreglass shell fairings. For further security the keel is attached via a very wide recessed top plate. A lifting keel is available as an option.
Like the keel fairings, the rudder is manufactured using CNC-milled female tooling, with a generous leading radius to ensure a high stall angle suitable for a mixed-use design of this type. Rig design is driven by the balance between performance and rating. The fractional sail plan features a powerful fixed backstay, no runners and two sets of aft-swept spreaders with shrouds run to the sheer. The result is a sail plan with a high aspect ratio, and with room for a generously sized but non-overlapping genoa. The mast, boom and fixed bowsprit are all carbon, while the infused hull and deck feature a hybrid blend of E-glass/carbon with solid carbon used in high load areas (an all-carbon hull and deck option is also avail- able). The largest possible sheets of pre-formed PVC core are used in the hull to minimise heavy core-joins.
On deck there is a German-style mainsheet system with the two primary winches recessed in the coamings and plenty of concealed

Most Italian designs now feature a relatively large sail plan for light Adriatic and Mediterranean conditions and the Ice52 is no exception. But with a high ballast ratio and powerful hull form performance upwind in heavy air should be well above average
storage for halyards and lines.
The base price of the new Ice52 is 520,000 euros. Umberto Felci, Desenzano del Garda
