Opposite, top: Canadian students Marc Farmer and Trevor Parekh pull a pretty good Wild Thing on the back of very limited multihull experience going into the Little Cup. Opposite, left to right: a corner of the C-Class board park; the structural tube inside the Rafale wing (bottom); several boats used a GC32-style screw adjuster for board rake. Above: the Groupama difference – the French boat went into the regatta with all of its systems thoroughly tested. The sealed deck-sweeper rig – seen (top) in extremis on Mischa Heemskirk’s A-Cat – that together with more efficient canting rigs will be a key area of development in 2016 with at least 30% more power there ready to be unleashed
So we kick the parts off the boom and bear away for the leeward gate. Now there is one problem with sailing without the flap. The wing won’t ease because the centre of pressure is no longer aft of the pivot axis. When you get hit by a puff you now have to pull the wing out because it will not spontaneously ease. Fortunately, C-cats all have port and star- board sheets, so you can easily do this by pulling on the cross deck lead.
So now Mike is sitting on the hull playing the wing in and out and I’m on the wire and we are flying upwind at 15kt or so. The stripped wing is really clean and efficient. 43ft tall and 160ft2 aspect ratio.
, that’s some
After overstanding the weather gate by just a bit, we are checking the time limit to make sure we can still get a score out of this. It is pretty close. We have to finish within 30 minutes of Groupama, and we have less than 15 minutes to go. So we aren’t pussyfooting around as we come into the windward mark. I’m not really close-hauled any more, and the wing is out over the top of the leeward sheeting point. Which means that when the 30kt lift
comes we have nothing to pull the wing out with. Over and Out.
Our RIB is on the other side of the lake salvaging our flap and the committee RIBs are not briefed or equipped for such a rescue. We flounder around for a while, wrapping the little Spectra lines that are all over these boats in a number of propellers and generally making things worse and worse. By the time we get it right side up and back to the club there are more broken parts than unbroken parts.
If we hadn’t tried to complete the course we probably could have worked all night and been back on the water the next day. As it is, there is too much to do and not enough reason to do it. I don’t have any confidence in our speed, so we would be accomplishing very little. Staying up all night looks like it will accomplish very little. Then Daniel and Stephan mention that they are taking Hydroptè
re.CH out for an evening spin and wouldn’t we like to come? Then we are also invited to a fondue at Christophe Hentsch’s lake-front home. We decide to stand down and be tourists for the rest of the week. Sometimes you just have to stop.
